Process

Sketch Ideation

Ideas generated during this phase alternated between wood-first and plastic-first brainstorming. Ideas were generated attempting to play to the strengths of both lathing wood and the flexibility of 3D printing.

Render Ideation

Quick 3D rendering gave a better understanding of the wood turning process and how it would affect the final product. It became clear what shapes were conducive to tight tolerances.

Refinement Tests

Because the form was so simple, proportion and shape needed to be perfect. A multitude of tests were 3D sculpted to find the ideal forms for each componenet then combined to find the proper visual balance.

Print Tests

To maintain the simple form, plugs or visible buttons were not an option. A hidden thread was the more difficult but invisible solution. Multiple print tests ensured the precise tolerances necessary for a satisfyingly tactile feel with little resistance for the screw action as well as a seamless fit inside the wood.

Build

The wooden top was lathed from a solid piece of walnut. Custom braces were built for the precision needed in drilling a seamless fit between wood and plastic.
